This book has been updated since it’s first writing, but still contains many many errors.
Hunter covers the material well, and provides a good overview of LA. In general, its a good read and a good attempt at practical, down the earth info for actors. In a world of only marginally helpful books, this one is better than most.
BUT don’t use the specifics given (prices, phone numbers, names of people, etc) since many are outdated. My biggest concern was that the author often talks about things being “illegal” when they in fact, are not. They are simply not within UNION rules for the industry. Illegal and against union policy are not the same thing!
Most of my major issues fell within the section on child actors. The vast majority of this information was just plain incorrect. Although she references current topics such as the Coogan Law, the information she gives is misleading…again, applying California rules (the Coogan does not exist anywhere but in California) and union policies with fact. If you are a child actor or parent, beware of this section!
Also, the book often references a web site with resources you can purchase from her (one long commercial–yuck)and yet the web site is not up and running.

A great book for actors and actresses moving to Los Angeles!, April 1, 1999
    By A Customer
This review is from: Hollywood, Here I Come: An insider’s guide to a successful Acting and Modeling career (Paperback)

I picked this book up when it was hot off the press in February and found it to be an invaluable tool for any actor or actress planning on moving to Los Angeles. The book contains thousands of phone numbers for just about anything the working actor needs. It familiarizes you with the city, lets you know what to expect about the field, and encourages you to give it your best. There are chapters that explain all the major guilds and how to be admitted. The book takes you through a guided program on getting headshots, landing an agent, and fitting yourself into the Los Angeles acting market. One chapter is all about finding a night time survival job to pay the bills while you attend auditions during the day. Another chapter covers the audition process and most of the publications in the industry. The only problem with this book is the title. Modeling is mentioned sporadically throughout the book even though the title makes you think that modeling is covered as much as acting. If you are an aspiring model I do not recommend this book. I only recommend this book to anyone planning on pursuing an acting career in the Los Angeles area.
